Electronic Mail to and from Off-campus Sites

< Previous | Next >

Just as with paper mail, you need to know your recipient's address before sending an electronic mail (e-mail) message. At Dartmouth, if you use the BlitzMail program for e-mail, we have tried to make it as simple and reliable as paper mail. Enter the person's name and the message will be delivered. If you are going to use BlitzMail frequently, you should verify that your preferred address is set to "BlitzMail" (select Edit DND Entry from the BlitzMail menu).

Unfortunately, sending e-mail to recipients outside Dartmouth isn't as easy; you can't just send an e-mail message to john doe@stanford and expect it to get through. This is also the case if you don't use the BlitzMail program for your e-mail (you use, for example, Thunderbird or AppleMail).

To Receive E-Mail Off Campus

If someone wants to send you mail from off campus (from another institution), your e-mail address is yourfirstname.mi.yourlastname@dartmouth.edu (for example, Jane Doe's e-mail address would be jane.m.doe@dartmouth.edu). There should be no spaces (use a period instead) between names for off-campus e-mail (spaces are only permissible when using BlitzMail to send mail to another person at Dartmouth). Please note that, while BlitzMail permits you to create and use nicknames, the only guaranteed e-mail address is that of the aforementioned format.

To Send E-Mail Off Campus

When sending e-mail to someone at another institution, you must have their complete (john.doe@stanford.edu) e-mail address. Ask them for their e-mail address, or have them send you a message, then use the Reply to Sender command to respond.
