How Can I Request a Return Receipt for My Message? And When I Get a Return Receipt, Did the Addressee Read the Message or Does it Just Mean the Message was Delivered?

You can request a return receipt by selecting it from the Options menu in the Compose window. If the recipient reads mail on BlitzMail, the return receipt comes back when the person actually opens the message; otherwise, the receipt returns when the message has been delivered to the final mail system (for example, to off-campus addresses or Dartmouth's UNIX or OpenVMS systems).

Is There a Limit to the Amount of Information I Can Cut and Paste from Another File (For Example, a Microsoft Word Document) into a BlitzMail Message?

If you are using a Macintosh, you can paste about 30,000 characters (about 15 pages) of text into a BlitzMail window before it complains. If you paste more than 30,000 characters, the operation will not be allowed. While Windows computers do not prohibit this action, the result is not always consistent. We do not recommend sending e-mail messages of this size.

Is There a Limit to the Size of a File I Can Attach to a BlitzMail Message?

You can enclose up to a 40 MB file. These large files may not be able to be received by e-mail systems outside of Dartmouth.

What's the Maximum Number of People I Can Send a Blitz to At One Time?

Technically, you can have a total of 500 recipients for a single message (that count includes all the names in the To:, Cc: and Bcc: fields). However, Dartmouth's E-mail policies discourage mass mailings — especially if it is an unsolicited mailing.

I'm Going to Be Away For a Couple of Weeks. Is There a Way for BlitzMail to Route All My Incoming Mail to Another Address? I Would Like My Secretary or Colleague to Be Aware of New Mail Without Having to Open My Mailbox.

You can enter a forwarding address in the Automatic Actions section of the Preferences option. Select Forward all mail to: and enter the electronic address of your secretary or colleague. All mail addressed to your BlitzMail account will be sent to that address instead of to your In Box. When you return, simply uncheck the Forward all mail to: box. Note: Messages that were forwarded to the other e-mail address will not be in your account when you return.

I Just Set My Folder to Expire After a Year, but All the Messages in It Are Still Set to Six Months. What Gives?

Resetting the expiration interval for a folder does not change the expiration dates on any of the messages in that folder. To do this, open the Folder window, choose Select All under the Edit menu, and select Set Expiration under the File menu of that window. The expiration interval you enter will affect all the messages in that folder.

How Can I Move a Message to Another Folder Without Having to Open That Folder?

By dragging a message from the summary window to the Folders icon in the column on the left side of the BlitzMail window, you get a pop-up menu listing all available folders. Selecting the desired folder from this list moves the message to that folder. You can also select the folder you want the message to be in by selecting that folder from the pop-up list by the Folder field at the bottom left of the message window.

How Can I Change the Expiration Date for a Bulletin I Have Posted?

You can't. However, you can repost the bulletin, and then remove the old one. The expiration limit is 99 days.

Why Won't My Bulletin Post?

First, you should be sure you are an authorized poster for that topic. If you are and you can compose the Bulletin but the system will not allow you to send it, you should check to be sure you have included text in your bulletin's Subject: field. If that is not the problem, contact the IT Service Desk (Help Desk) at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's IT support office.
