To send a file with an e-mail message, just drag the file that you want onto the Compose window within BlitzMail.
Most e-mail systems have a limit on the size of an outgoing enclosure. BlitzMail (Macintosh and Windows) has a limit of 40,000,000 bytes (40 MB) as the overall size of an individual message. Other mail systems may have a larger or smaller limitation. BlitzMail does not have a limit on the size of enclosures that can be received. BlitzMail does have a 600 MB limit for all mail in your mailbox, at which point you will be unable to send any mail, although you will still be able to receive it once your mailbox reaches the 600 MB limit.
If you have a long-term need to maintain e-mail messages with enclosures, you can use an e-mail program other than BlitzMail that allows you to download your e-mail from the server to your computer. It can be maintained there rather than on the servers. However, then you can access your e-mail only from the computer on which it was downloaded. Contact the IT Service Desk (Help Desk) at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's IT support office for additional information about this option.
BlitzMail enclosures must be encoded before they can be sent. The act of encoding occurs automatically by the mail program. Encoding adds approximately 33% to the size of a file and must be taken into consideration when sending one or more files.
If you need to transfer a file larger than 40 MB, you can use a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program. Dartmouth provides two FTP servers. For information about using the FTP servers, see Using a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Program.
