Reporting Fraud

< Previous | Next >

If you suspect identity theft, follow the recommendations at Responding to Suspected Identity Theft.

If you have discovered a specific instance of your personal identifying information being used by someone else for fraudulent or criminal purposes, follow these steps:

  • For any accounts that have been fraudulently accessed or opened, contact the security departments of the appropriate creditors or financial institutions and close the accounts.
  • If you believe your Social Security Number has been used illegally, contact the Social Security Fraud Hotline at (800) 269-0271 or see Social Security Online.
  • File a local police report where the identity theft took place and keep the report number.
  • File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission [FTC at (877) 438-4338; or TDD at (202) 326-2502].
  • Report the theft to the ID Theft Clearinghouse toll free at [(877) ID-THEFT or (877) 438-4338].
  • Keep a record of all your communications with credit bureaus, creditors, financial institutions, and the police.
