If you suspect identity theft, follow the recommendations at Responding to Suspected Identity
Theft.
If you have discovered a specific instance of your personal identifying
information being used by someone else for fraudulent or criminal purposes,
follow these steps:
- For any accounts that have been fraudulently accessed or opened, contact
the security departments of the appropriate creditors or financial institutions
and close the accounts.
- If you believe your Social Security Number has been used illegally, contact
the Social Security Fraud Hotline at (800) 269-0271 or see Social Security Online.
- File a local police report where the identity theft took place and keep the
report number.
- File a complaint with the Federal Trade
Commission [FTC at (877) 438-4338; or TDD at (202) 326-2502].
- Report the theft to the ID Theft Clearinghouse toll free at [(877) ID-THEFT
or (877) 438-4338].
- Keep a record of all your communications with credit bureaus, creditors,
financial institutions, and the police.
