Why Are These Changes Being Made?

Early in 2007, Peter Kiewit Computing Services completed a network security assessment. As part of that assessment, we hired an outside firm to find ways in which Dartmouth's assets could be at risk or lost. One of their recommendations was for us to require people who use our network to authenticate so that we would know who is using our resources.

This recommendation coincided with a U.S. government update to the CALEA Act; see Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). This act specifies that institutions who provide access to the Internet must be able to provide federal agencies with information in the event of a subpoena.
