I Have an iPhone or iPod Touch. How Do I Use the Wireless Network?

There are three basic steps you to do to get your iPhone or iPod Touch to work on the Dartmouth Secure wireless network: install the Dartmouth Root Certificate, install your personal certificate, and configure the network settings to use your certificate.

Installing the Dartmouth Root Certificate

  1. Using Safari on your phone, go to http://collegeca.dartmouth.edu and click Root certificates found in the navigation bar on the left of the window.
  2. Click Dartmouth CertAuth 1; the Install profile application should launch and display the certificate.
  3. Click the Install button to install the root certificate.
  4. You will receive a warning that the authenticity of the certificate cannot be verified; click Install now to confirm. Then click Done.

Installing Your Personal Certificate

You will need to move your personal certificate from your computer to your iphone via e-mail.

From a Macintosh Computer

  1. On your Macintosh computer, start the Keychain Access application (in Applications\Utilities).
  2. Click My certificates in the bottom left panel, select your personal certificate, then select File then Export Items.
  3. Choose a filename to hold your exported certificate, and enter a password to protect the contents of the file. Choose a different password (not your regular Dartmouth password) for this. This is the ".p12 file".
  4. Send yourself an email message, including the .p12 file as an attachment.
  5. Open that email using the Mail application on the iphone and click the .p12 attachment; the Install profile application should launch and display the certificate.
  6. Click Install then confirm by clicking Install Now. Enter the file password you chose in step 3 then click Next then Done.

From a Windows Computer

  1. On your Windows computer, start Internet Explorer.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options, then the Content tab then the Certificates button then the Personal tab.
  3. Select your personal certificate, then select Export then Next.
  4. Select Yes, export the private key then Next twice.
  5. Enter a password to protect the contents of the file. Choose a different password (not your regular Dartmouth password) for this. Click Next.
  6. Enter a name for this file. Click Next then Finish then OK.
  7. Send yourself an email message, including the file you just created as an attachment.
  8. Open that email using the Mail application on the iphone and click the attachment; the Install profile application should launch and display the certificate.
  9. Click Install then confirm by clicking Install Now. Enter the file password you chose in step 5 then click Next then Done.

Configuring Network Settings for Dartmouth Secure

  1. Launch the Settings application then choose Wi-Fi.
  2. Under "Choose a Network..."; touch the words Dartmouth Secure (NOT the blue arrow).
  3. Change the Mode field from "Automatic" to EAP-TLS. Click Enter Password.
  4. Your personal certificate should now automatically be selected under "Identity"; if not, click Identity and select your certificate.
  5. Click Join. You will receive a prompt to accept the certificate for "radius1.dartmouth.edu"; click Accept.

Your phone will now work on the Dartmouth Secure network.
