To start file sharing on a computer running Windows XP Professional, click
Start, Control Panel, then double-click
Network Connections. Right-click the connection you are using
to connect to the network, then click Properties. On the
General tab in the This connection uses the following
items box, make sure File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft
Networks is checked. If this option doesn't appear in the list, click
Install, then double-click Service. Select
Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers,
then File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks from the
Network Service list.
Next, right-click Start, then click
Explore. Right-click the folder you want to share, then click
Sharing and Security. We do not recommend you
share an entire drive. Only share the specific folder(s) you want to give other
people access to. On the Sharing tab, click Share this
folder. Click Permissions, then Add.
In the Enter the Object Names to Select field, enter the
user accounts of the specific people to whom you want to give
access to this folder. Accounts should be entered in the format
KIEWIT\John_Doe. Make sure to add yourself to the list of
people with access to this folder. On the Share Permissions
tab, select each user you added and indicate what type of privileges they have
to the files within this folder. We recommend you give the user
Everyone no rights at all. In other words, select
Everyone from the list of Groups or User
Names, then remove all the checks in the Permissions
section at the bottom of the Share Permissions tab. Once the
folder is shared in the Windows Internet Explorer window, the folder
will appear with a hand beneath it.
Connecting to a Windows Computer from Another Windows Computer
From the Start menu, select Run, then
enter two slashes (\\) followed by
the name or the current
IP address of the target computer (such as
\\Johnsmithdell). Note that for Kiewit domain computers, you
will need to log on to the Kiewit domain, so be sure to add
to KIEWIT\ to your account name, and replace all empty
spaces with underscores (john_smith). Your password in
this case will be your Kiewit domain password. When connected, enter in
appropriate user name and password and the
folders that were set to share will become available.
Connecting to a Windows XP Computer from a Mac
OS X Computer
From the connecting computer, select Go from the
Finder Tool bar and enter the name of the target
machine. For a Mac OS X computer to connect to a Windows
machine, you will need to enter the path to the target machine
in the syntax smb://{machine name}. To borrow from the
example above, the correct path, in this case, would be
smb://johndoedell, or depending on the target machines
physical proximity,
smb://johndoedell.kiewit.dartmouth.edu.
From the next window, connect with your user name and password information
for the target computer (not necessarily the same information that is auto
filled in the connect window), and select the volume you want to mount. Note
that for Kiewit domain computers, you will need to log on to the Kiewit domain,
so be sure to add to KIEWIT\ to the account name,
and replace all empty spaces with underscores
(KIEWIT\John_Doe). Your password, in this case, will be
your Kiewit domain password. When connected, enter the appropriate user name
and password and the folders that were set to share will become available.
Disabling Windows File Sharing
When you have finished sharing the information, we recommend you immediately
disable file sharing. To do this, right-click Start, then
click Explore. Right-click the folder you shared and select
Sharing and Security. On the Sharing tab,
select Do not share this folder.
