Computers running Windows XP and Windows Vista should have a Windows Update option in the menu that appears when you click Start, then Programs. When you select this option, Internet Explorer will automatically start and take you to a Web page. If you can't find the Windows Update option on the Start menu, or if you are running a different version of the Windows operating system, start Internet Explorer and select Windows Update from the Tools menu.
Once you are at the Microsoft Web site, click Express to get a list of critical updates that are necessary for your computer. The program will scan your computer to determine what version of the operating system you are running and what updates you need to install to fix bugs or security holes that have been discovered. Once the scan is complete, there will be categories of updates that you can choose from. You should always perform any updates that are listed in the High Priority category. Click Review and Install updates, then click Install Updates. Answer the questions as they appear on the screen.
If you find there are high priority updates to install, once they are installed, we recommend you repeat this process until the number of high priority updates that need to be installed is zero.
You may be prompted to restart your computer after installing updates to fully integrate them into your operating system.
We do not always recommend you perform updates from the other two categories. If you have questions about any of the updates that are found in either the Software or Hardware categories, please contact the IT Service Desk (Help Desk) at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's IT support office.
You can configure your computer to search for updates automatically. If you are running Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista, make sure you are logged in as a user with administrator privileges, then click Start, Control Panel, then double-click Automatic Updates (Vista refers to it as Windows Updates). We recommend you select Automatic, then specify Every day and a time when your computer will most likely be on and connected to the Internet.
