Configuring Software Updates on a Mac OS X Computer

For computers running Mac OS X, select System Preferences from the Apple menu, then Software Update. Click in the box next to Check for updates, then select Weekly to configure your computer to look for operating system updates on a weekly basis. By clicking the box below, you can also choose to download updates automatically, then have the computer ask your permission to install them. This can save updating time when system updates are required.

Next, click Check Now. This will immediately start the process. If there are updates that need to be installed, a list of those updates will appear. Click Install to install them. You may be prompted for the administrator password for some updates. You may also need to restart your computer to fully integrate the updates.

Thereafter, on a weekly basis, the Software Updates utility will automatically start and check for updates needed for your computer. If there are new updates, you will be prompted to install them.

Note: Checked items in the Software Update window are considered necessary, while unchecked items need to be installed only if they pertain to other hardware/software you have installed (e.g., software associated with an iPod).

If you have questions, please contact the IT Service Desk (Help Desk) at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's IT support office.
