Dartmouth has pre-configured Sygate so that many applications
that are commonly used on campus are automatically allowed to access the
network when needed (e.g., BlitzMail, Microsoft Office
Updates, Oracle Calendar).
When a program is being installed or run on your computer that requires
access to the network that Dartmouth's central Sygate server is
not familiar with, a box will pop up asking if you want to allow the program to
access the network, and if you want Sygate to remember the answer. In
the case of software products you are familiar with, you can select to allow
the program to access the network, and even check the box for Sygate to
remember your answer.
More importantly, in a case where you are not familiar or completely sure
what Sygate is asking you about, we recommend you select No,
but do not check Remember my answer, and do not ask me
again for this application. If an application you were trying to start
at that time does not work now, quit the application, then start it again.
Sygate will ask you this question again; answer Yes
the second time. Answering Yes should allow the
application to continue to run.

Peter Kiewit Computing Services will be monitoring new applications and
adding them to the approved list of applications so that you will not be
prompted about allowing the program. If we discover that someone has said
Yes to an application that is actually something that
compromises their computer from the central Sygate server, we will be
able to change Sygate for everyone who has it installed on their
computer so that that particular application will not run, regardless of how
the individual users answered the question on their computers.
