How to Install the eToken Software

Note: Aladdin recommends uninstalling previous versions before installing a new one; see How to Remove the Software.

  • Download the appropriate file for your computer from the Aladdin eToken Runtime Environment Web site.
  • Double-click the zip file, then double-click the PKIClient file to begin the installation. Enter the administrator's password for your computer after clicking on the lock icon.
  • Answer the questions as they appear on the screen. When the installation is complete, restart your computer.
  • You can verify the eToken software was installed on your Mac OS 10.4 or Mac OS 10.5 computer by finding the eToken Properties application in the "eToken" folder in your "Applications" folder.
  • You do not need to do anything else to your eToken. It was set up with everything that needed to be on it when it was created for you.

Web Browser Configuration

If you use Safari as your Web browser, you do not need to do anything. Safari uses Keychain Accesswhich automatically sees the eToken.

To use your eToken in Firefox, you need to configure Firefox appropriately. (Note: The following directions are for Firefox version 3.0.1. If you have an earlier version installed, upgrade to the latest version before proceeding.) To configure FireFox to use your eToken:

  • Start Firefox (If you have any installed PKI certificates, you will have to remove them within Keychain Access to use the eToken in their place.)
  • From the Firefox menu select Preferences, then select the Advanced icon then the Encryption tab. Click the Security Devices button.
  • In the Security Devices window, click the Load button. Give the module a name such as 'eToken'.
    • If you are using Mac OS 10.3 with PKIClient version 3.65, enter /usr/local/lib/libetpkcs11.so in the Module filename field.
    • If you are using Mac OS 10.4 or Mac OS 10.5 with PKIClient version 4.55, then enter /usr/local/lib/libetpkcs11.dylib in the Module filename field.
  • Click OK to confirm that you want to install the security module. You should receive a dialog saying that the installation was successful.
  • Quit Firefox. Connect your eToken, launch Firefox, and test your eToken. To do this, see Testing a Certificate.

If you have questions, contact the IT Service Desk at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's IT support office.

Note: Although the following has not been observed when using Mac OS 10.5, when you connect your eToken and launch a browser, a blank document icon for "PKCS11.tokend" may appear on your dock. This is a plug-in for the application. It will bounce briefly, stop and show as "application not responding". Your eToken will still work.
