To access Kerberos-controlled network services at Dartmouth, such as some licensed databases, you need to install the Kerberos software on your computer. The software was originally developed at Cornell University to provide authentication for Web page access and has been licensed for use at Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
Kerberos works with the SideCar application to create a network-wide authentication ticket that cannot be forged. This electronic ticket can, in turn, verify to a remote server that you are the individual using a particular computer. SideCar is an application that permits a network server program to request an individual's Kerberos ticket. SideCar listens for these requests and returns the user's ticket if they are already authenticated with Kerberos. If no ticket is currently checked out, SideCar asks Kerberos to present the authentication dialog box to the user so they can get a ticket, and then sends that ticket back to the requesting server.
Note: SideCar is not compatible with the Intel Macintosh computers. If you have an Intel Macintosh computer, you will need to use either PKI certificates or the Web Authentication system for authentication.
