Virus Alert for April 1, 2009: Conficker

As has been reported in the media, including CBS 60 Minutes on Sunday, March 29, a particularly nasty computer virus has spread throughout the internet targeting Windows computers.  The virus, known as Conficker, may activate a large 'botnet' on April 1, which may cause extensive disruption of the internet, including email and websites.

Recent scans of Dartmouth computers show no infection of computers, and with each Dartmouth machine having up to date anti-virus protection, Computing Services believes the Dartmouth network will be minimally affected, if at all. However, due to the estimated 10 million infected systems on the Internet all members of the Dartmouth community should be alert to computer problems which may include:

  • increased spam
  • email links to fraudulent websites
  • account lockouts (due to Conficker virus guessing passwords)
  • and very slow internet speeds.

Apple users are not affected directly, unless they run Windows.

If you experience what you believe are the direct effects of this virus on your computer, please contact your department IT consultant, the IT Service (Help) Desk, or email help@dartmouth.edu or call 646-2999 and follow the voicemail directions.
