BlitzMail or UNIX Mail?

BlitzMail

The primary mail server provided at Dartmouth is BlitzMail. It is a client server system initially designed for Macintosh and Windows clients. In general, UNIX mail programs are designed to read mail sent to the UNIX system, not mail on remote BlitzMail servers.

The recommended method of using BlitzMail (including off-campus use) is with the supported Macintosh and Windows clients. Your computer must be connected to the campus network or to the Internet by some other mechanism and have TCP/IP networking configured and enabled.

BlitzMail can be downloaded from the Software Downloads Web page.

If you have questions, please contact the Computing Help Desk at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's computing support office.

UNIX Mail

If you have a UNIX account, you can forward all your new incoming mail to your UNIX account. If you are using a Macintosh, select Edit DND Entry from the BlitzMail menu. In the Preferred E-Mail Address field, enter the UNIX e-mail address (username@somehost.dartmouth.edu). From then on, all mail arriving for your.full.name@dartmouth.edu will be redirected by the mail hub to the address you specified. Always test your changes to make sure they are working as you anticipate or you may lose mail. To use the Northstar system for your e-mail, specify username@northstar.dartmouth.edu; do not use the individual workstation names, since they may change over time. Your old BlitzMail account will not be affected and will remain on the BlitzMail servers.

From your UNIX account, you can select from a variety of mail programs (such as pine, which is a nice menu-driven program).
