Dartmouth College has negotiated software site licenses for Dartmouth users
with some vendors. Dartmouth pays licensing fees for the right to use
these software packages. In some cases, users are asked to share in these
costs. In all cases, the software must be used on computers in the Dartmouth
domain by Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students primarily for academic
purposes. Copying and distributing the software is illegal.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Dartmouth administers a campus educational license for Red Hat Enterprise
Linux (RHEL), which allows faculty and staff to use RHEL at a significantly
reduced price. For more information, see redhat.NETWORK PROXY.
Sun (Systems Include Sparc Systems, Ultra Systems,
Etc.)
We are beginning to acquire both hardware and software from Sun
Microsystems. Sun's educational software program is called ScholarPac, which
offers products at highly discounted prices. Solaris upgrades are presently
available at no charge. A limited number of compiler licenses are available via
the network. Other tools and applications for your Sun workstation may be
purchased through the ScholarPac program.
IBM (Systems Include the RS/6000 Series)
IBM's Scholars program provides faculty and researchers at higher education
institutions with academic and research offerings, including software such as
compilers and software development tools. A description of the program and an
application form is available on the Web; see IBM University
Relations.
DEC (Systems Include the Alpha Series)
Digital's CSLG (Campus-wide Software License Grant) is a software licensing
plan for Dartmouth users that requires registration of their
workstations. Available software includes:
- Digital UNIX operating system upgrades.
- VMS and Ultrix operating systems upgrades.
- Digital UNIX Compilers.
- Digital UNIX Applications.
- Some applications for VMS, Ultrix, NT, Windows, DOS, OS/2, Macintosh, and
Sun.
For the complete list of available software, see
Campuswide Software License Grant Program.
A license must be obtained prior to receiving any software from Dartmouth.
If you do not already have a license, send e-mail to richard.brittain@dartmouth.edu.
Software is distributed via CD-ROM and is loaned on request.
