Connecting Via SSH to Run an X (Graphical) Program

You can still use Xwindows software if you are connecting via SSH. The steps below should work for both PCs and for Macintosh systems. In this example, we will connect to the computer "cascade" and assume the IP address of your machine is 129.170.88.103.

  1. Write down the IP address of your system.
    1. How Do I Find the IP Address of My 95/98/NT Machine?
    2. For the Macintosh, the IP address should be shown in the Network Control Panel.
  2. Start up your Xserver (PC=Reflections, Mac=MacX), but do not open any connections.
  3. Use your SSH client to connect to Cascade.
    1. Windows: How Do I Connect With SSH Secure Shell?
    2. Macintosh: How to Configure MacSSH to Access Administrative Systems.
  4. Once you have logged in, you will need to tell the host computer the IP address of your computer using the command setenv DISPLAY 129.170.88.103:0.
  5. You should now be able to run the command jmenu. A menu should appear on your screen with different software options.
