Dartmouth has three wireless networks that provide connectivity to the
Internet, with only two of these providing direct access to Dartmouth
network-based resources. If you are unsure which network to choose, see
Which SSID Should I use?
Dartmouth Public: In order to connect to the
Dartmouth Public network, just select it from the list of
available networks.
Dartmouth Library Public: In order to
connect to the Dartmouth Library Public network, just select
it from the list of available networks.
Dartmouth Secure: In order to use Dartmouth Secure, you
will need to follow the steps below before you use it the first time. If you do
not already have the root and private certificates, you will need to connect to
the Dartmouth Public network in order to download those first.
It is important to note that these steps only need to be done the first time
you try to connect. After you have followed these configuration steps, you will
just need to select Dartmouth Secure from the list of
networks. If you are using an eToken, you will also have to enter your
certificate password.
On Windows XP:
You must use Internet Explorer for this configuration
process.
- If you are running Windows XP, you will need to install an update from
Microsoft. This update is available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893357.
(Note: Your computer must be restarted following installation
of this update, before proceeding with the remainder of these
instructions.)
- Install the Dartmouth Root
Certificate on your computer. (Click Dartmouth CertAuth 1
CA.)
- Install a
private certificate on your computer, or
get an eToken that has your private certificate on it.
- Next, click Start, then Control Panel,
then double-click Network Connections. Right-click on
Wireless Network Connection that appears on the right side of
the Network Connections window and select Properties from the
menu that appears.
- Next, click the Wireless Networks tab, then click
Add in the Preferred Networks box.
Important: If you do not have a Wireless
Networks tab, this means the wireless card is disabled or that an
application other than the Windows operating system is managing your network
connections. Either enable your wireless card or open the application that is
managing your wireless connections (e.g., Intel PROSet, Broadcom, Dell
Wireless, or any other application installed by your computer's manufacturer)
and specify that you want to use Windows to manage your Wi-Fi connections.
- On the Association tab, enter Dartmouth
Secure in the Network name (SSID) field. Note that
this name is case-sensitive.
- In the Network Authentication field, select
WPA2. If WPA2 does not exist, please contact the Computing
Help Desk for assistance in updating the drivers for your wireless network
card.
- In the Data Encryption field, select
AES.
- Click the Authentication tab, then in the EAP
type field, select Smart Card or other
Certificate.
- Click the Properties button under EAP
type and select Use my smart card if using an eToken;
select Use a certificate on this computer if you are using a
software certificate. In the Trusted Root Certification
Authorities box, select Dartmouth CertAuth 1. Click
OK.
- Move Dartmouth Secure to the top of the Preferred Networks
list, then click OK.
- You can now connect to Dartmouth Secure as your default
wireless network whenever you are on campus.
On Windows Vista:
You must use Internet Explorer for this configuration
process.
Below are two methods for getting your machine configured; one is an
automatic script; the other is step-by-step instructions. Do one or the other;
you do not need to do both.
