Wireless Network

< Previous | Next >

If your laptop is equipped with a wireless network card, such as Cisco's Aironet card, Apple's Airport card, or Dell's TrueMobile card, you can easily connect to a network at institutions that are equipped with wireless capability. For information on how to configure your computer for their wireless network, contact the institution's Help Desk or network administrator. You should be aware that many wireless networks (including Dartmouth) transmit data over the wireless network unencrypted (e.g., Dartmouth Public). We strongly encourage anyone using a wireless network to start a virtual private network (VPN) connection prior to starting any other network-based services (e.g., e-mail, connecting to a central server, etc.). Information about protecting the transmission of your information is available; see Virtual Private Network (VPN) (authentication required).

Note: If you have a computer that has a wireless network card installed, you must be sure to shut down your computer or disable the wireless feature prior to boarding the plane to comply with airline requirements to disable radio transmission devices. If you are unsure how to disable wireless, contact the Computing Help Desk at (603) 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send electronic mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's computing support office.
