Printers

< Previous

If you plan on traveling with your printer, things may become a little more complicated. Few printers have power supplies that can automatically adjust to a foreign country's type of electricity. Check the labels on the power adapter or on the printer itself (some printers have built-in power supplies).

If the power adapter is rated for 100-240 VAC and 50-60 HZ, you can use it in most places with a converter plug (as explained under the section Electric Power). If it is rated for 110VAC and 60 HZ, you are out of luck. You will need a converter plug and a small transformer. These "step-up/step-down" transformers need to be rated at 30-50 watts and are readily available in most camera shops for $15-$25. They will handle small printers such as an Epson or HP inkjet printer, as well as most other personal printers. They will not handle laser printers. (Beware of devices that convert voltages for hair dryers, etc.; they will definitely turn your printer into a smoking ruin within seconds.)
