Network Connections

< Previous | Next >

If you find yourself in an environment that provides TCP/IP Ethernet services (for example, a foreign university), you should contact their Help Desk or network administrator to obtain help with your network settings if you experience difficulties in connecting.

Additionally, if you are working with a laptop and a wireless connection, the information sent and received could be easily monitored by someone with a similarly equipped computer. If you are working on one of the Dartmouth applications (such as BlitzMail, Banner, or one of the Oracle applications), it is recommended you use the Cisco VPN connection to Dartmouth to protect that traffic. While a VPN connection is established, information sent over the network to the Dartmouth applications will be encrypted between your computer and its destination. This will make it more difficult for people monitoring network traffic to see your user name, password, or any other confidential information you are transmitting. Information going to an outside location (e.g., Amazon.com, e-mail sent to a non-Dartmouth address, etc.) will be encrypted from your computer to the Berry Machine Room. Once it leaves the Machine Room, it will be unencrypted, unless you are using a means of communication that specifically encrypts the information from one end to the other (e.g., https).
