Foreign and Domestic Internet Access

< Previous | Next >

If you are a faculty or staff member, your department may have a toll-free number that you can use to call directly in to Dartmouth's modem pool. Calling a toll-free number is much cheaper than using a calling card. If your department would like to request one (there is a monthly charge for this number), e-mail the request to help@dartmouth.edu.

For extended travel, both foreign and domestic, we suggest setting up an account with a local Internet Service Provider (ISP). Local ISPs can set you up with an account to access the Internet through their system. Once that is set up, you can use all the Dartmouth network software (BlitzMail, Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, etc.). Another advantage is that you will receive local technical support, if necessary. You can cancel your account once you have completed your trip.

There are many free ISPs in foreign countries, particularly in Europe. They often provide a Web page that will walk you through signing up for an account, and provide lists of local access numbers so you can configure your computer before leaving home. To find these providers, use your favorite search engine and enter, for example, free internet Italy.

Additionally, different countries have different connection hardware and methods. The World Wide Phone Guide Web site offers many suggestions that can help you connect.
