Support for Windows Operating Systems

Computing Services provides support for the Windows XP Professional (SP3), Windows Vista and Windows 7. We do not provide support at this time for Windows 8, and do not recommend that anyone upgrade to Windows 8 until Microsoft releases Service Pack 1. In addition, we do not provide support for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP Home, Windows Vista Home, Windows NT Workstation, Windows 2000, or any of the Windows Server versions.

Windows XP

There are two versions of Windows XP: Windows XP Professional for business users and Windows XP Home Edition. Windows XP Home Edition lacks the robust network support of Windows XP Professional, and does not work well on the Dartmouth network so we do not provide support for Windows XP Home Edition. For more information on both of these products, see Microsoft's Web site.

Vista

There are several versions of Windows Vista. For more information on each of these products, see Microsoft's Web site. Dartmouth's Computing Services supports the Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Vista and is posting information on the Web regarding applications commonly used at Dartmouth and whether they work with Windows Vista; see our Compatibility Matrix

If you have a specific application(s) you rely on, one that must work on the computer on which you will be running Windows Vista, check the web page noted above, or with the vendor of that application prior to upgrading to Windows Vista to ensure your application will function properly.

  • If your computer came with Windows Vista already installed and your application(s) will not work properly under Vista, contact the IT Service Desk (Help Desk) or your department's IT support office about installing Windows XP.
  • If you have questions about Windows Vista or need help installing Windows XP Professional, please contact the IT Service Desk (Help Desk) or your department's IT support office.

Windows 7

For more information on Windows 7 versions, see Microsoft's Web site.  Dartmouth's Computing Services supports the Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows 7 and is posting information on the Web regarding applications commonly used at Dartmouth and whether they work with Windows 7; see our Compatibility Matrix

  • If your computer came with Windows 7 already installed and your application(s) will not work properly under Windows 7, contact the IT Service Desk (Help Desk) or your department's IT support office about installing Windows XP.
  • If you have questions about Windows 7 or need help installing Windows XP Professional, please contact the IT Service Desk (Help Desk) or your department's IT support office

Microsoft Agreement

Dartmouth has entered into an agreement with Microsoft that allows Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students to purchase upgrades to the Microsoft operating system on their computer for a significantly reduced price. For faculty and staff, this applies only to the computers that are owned by Dartmouth; not personal purchases. If your Dartmouth-owned computer is running a version of a Microsoft operating system that is not supported, please contact the IT Service Desk at 646-2999, send e-mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's IT support office to see if your hardware can be upgraded.

In addition, the IT Service Desk or your department's IT support office can tell you about other software that is available for the Windows operating system. For example, Dartmouth has an agreement with Microsoft that allows Dartmouth faculty, staff, and students to purchase some Microsoft products at a significantly reduced price. This includes software that Microsoft has developed for Windows. If you are interested in obtaining the Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) for your Windows computer, please contact The Computer Store at 646-3249 for pricing information.

Currently, Windows 7 Enterprise is the recommended operating system for faculty, staff and students.

If you have questions, contact the IT Service Desk at 646-2999, send e-mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or call your department's IT support office.
