Core Dartmouth Software Installer

Use the links below to install the core Dartmouth software that all students should have on their machines.

Important: You must be on the Dartmouth network, or have a VPN connection to the Dartmouth network to run these installers. See http://www.dartmouth.edu/comp/internet/offcampus/vpn/juniper.html for information on starting a VPN connection.

Macintosh OS X Core Dartmouth Software Installer

  1. First, make sure that your Macintosh OS X software is up-to-date.
  2. Next, click here to download the core Dartmouth software installer to your downloads folder.
  3. Open your Downloads folder, hold down the "Control" key and click wizardCurrent.jar. From the menu that appears, click Open then click Open again.
Important: Mac OS X 10.8 has a "gate keeper" function which, by default, prevents you from installing software from any web site other than Apple. This means that, unless you have modified the security settings on your computer from the default, Dartmouth's software installer won't work without holding down the Command key to run the installer.
  4. If you are prompted to update your version of Java, click Install. Once that is complete, the Dartmouth College Software Installer application will start. Click Next.
  5. Enter your computer's Administrator password that you set when you went through the initial computer setup process. Click Next to continue.
  6. Enter your Dartmouth username (NetID) and Dartmouth password. This is the same username and password you use to log into Dartmouth e-mail. Click Next to continue.
  7. The Installing Software window, with a progress bar, will appear.
Important: Depending upon the speed of your connection to the Internet, the process may take many minutes to complete, and may appear to hang at times.
  8. Application windows (e.g. Firefox, Symantec) may appear for short periods of time during the installation. Do NOT click anything in these windows. When the installation of that application is complete the window will disappear.
  9. An Installation Complete window will appear. Click Finish on the Dartmouth College Software window.
  10. Restart your computer.
  11. Your desktop will be changed to have a picture of the Baker Library Tower as wall paper, and a file called Dartmouth Bookmark.html will appear. Follow the steps below to complete your installation:
  12. The Dartmouth College Installer adds Firefox (a popular Web browser) to your Applications folder. You can drag the icon that launches this application down to your Dock to create an easy-to-access shortcut.
  13. Next, add the bookmarks that appear on your desktop to either (or both) Safari or Firefox:
    • In Safari, from the menu bar, select File then Import Bookmarks. Navigate to your desktop, and choose the file named Dartmouth Bookmarks.html. Click Import. After the import, the Bookmarks section will open. Note that the bookmarks you imported are listed as, "imported mm/dd/yy". Click this entry once to highlight it, then in the center column, click the drop down arrow to expand the Bookmarks Bar entry. Drag and drop the 6 folders/shortcuts that appear into the Bookmarks Bar entry under "Bookmarks" found in the left hand column of the window.
    • In Firefox, from the menu bar, select Bookmarks, then Show All Bookmarks. Click the "star" icon from the icon menu bar, and select Import Bookmarks from HTML. Navigate to your desktop and select the file named Dartmouth Bookmarks.html, then click Open. Close the Library window.
  14. Configure Symantec Antivirus to regularly check for virus and program updates. Visit http://www.dartmouth.edu/comp/soft-comp/software/downloads/mac/symantec.html  for information on how to do that.
  15. Lync is an instant messaging, video chatting application in use at Dartmouth. Configure Lync for your account. Visit http://www.dartmouth.edu/comp/docs/e-mail-transition/lync/configuring_lync.pdf for information on how to do that.

  12. Next, add the bookmarks that appear on your desktop to either (or both) Internet Explorer or Firefox:

Click Browse to navigate to your desktop and select the DartmouthBookmarks.html file found there. Click Open then Next then Import then Finish. Restart Internet Explorer. Your Dartmouth bookmarks will appear under the Bookmarks Toolbar folder.
    • In Firefox, follow the steps above to import the bookmarks into Internet Explorer. When that is done, start Firefox and right click while pointed at nothing at the very top of the Firefox window. From the menu that pops up, select Menu Bar. From the menu bar that just appeared, select History then Show All History then Import and Backup. Select Import Data from Another Browser then Microsoft Internet Explorer then click Next twice then Finish.
  13. Windows 7 only: Configure Symantec Endpoint Protection to regularly check for virus and program updates. Visit http://www.dartmouth.edu/comp/soft-comp/software/downloads/windows/sav.html#config for information on how to do that.
Note for Windows 8 users: Windows 8 comes with built in anti-virus and endpoint protection software so the Symantec product is not necessary and does not get installed.
  14. Lync is an instant messaging, video chatting application in use at Dartmouth. Configure Lync for your account. Visit http://www.dartmouth.edu/comp/docs/e-mail-transition/lync/configuring_lync.pdf for information on how to do that.
