Dartmouth's Intellispeech™ System

What Is IntelliSpeech™?

The IntelliSpeech™ Speech Recognition System enables users to reach anyone on campus by dialing "0" while at the same time reducing traffic to the operators and the College's main telephone number. Using voice-activated commands, the system allows you to contact the people you need directly without waiting to be transferred through the available operator or hunting through a directory.

How to Use IntelliSpeech™

If you're on campus, dial 0. If you're off campus, dial (603) 646-1110. During the work week, an operator will answer that number. On nights, weekends, and holidays, the call will be answered by the IntelliSpeech™ system.

Ask For a Person or Department

When you hear the voice greeting, say the first and last name or the department name. (For example, say "John Smith" or "Human Resources.") If a person is usually called by a nickname, please test both the long name and the nickname. You may listen to the entire voice greeting, or you may interrupt it and just pronounce the name.

In the initial learning stages, the system will always say, "I think you said, 'John Smith' [for example]. Is this correct?" Please clearly say "Yes" to be connected to that person, or "No" and wait for further instructions. When the system has learned pronunciations, it will no longer need to confirm each request.

If the Speech Recognizer Is Unable to Transfer You

If the speech recognizer is unable to recognize the person or department name after three tries, it will transfer you to the operator. During the workweek, an operator will answer; during other times, you will be transferred to a voice mail system offering you options to try again or be connected to various departments.

If You Want to Speak to An Operator

During the work week, if you would like to be transferred to an operator, you can just say "Operator".

Tips for Success

  • Pronounce each word individually and clearly.
  • Do not say "please" or "extension" before or after requesting a person or department.
  • You can say "back up" to go to a previous point in the system.
  • Say "operator" to be transferred immediately to the operator (workweek) or voice mail system (other times).
