Up and Running Information

Computing technology changes rapidly, and keeping up with the latest updates or making the transition to a new machine can be difficult and time-consuming. Computing Services offers a service called "Up and Running" that is designed to help people begin using new computers and software as quickly and as easily as possible. This service, for both Mac OS and Dell Windows 98/2000/XP/Vista computers, is available for a fee that is designed to help recover costs.

Up and Running Services

  • Installing the standard (core) Dartmouth software.
  • Installing updates to the operating system software.
  • Installing new or updated versions of standard productivity applications (note the "Additional Policies" section below).
  • Transferring files from an old computer to a new one at a cost of between $50-$122 (note the "Additional Policies" section below).

There are two ways you can take advantage of the Up and Running service:

  1. We will perform any of the services listed above, including a standard Dartmouth software load, in our facility or in your office. The Up and Running Service Technician will only go to on-campus departmental and faculty offices to perform this service; they will not go to homes, College-owned housing, or residence-hall rooms. On-site work can only be charged to a departmental account; no cash, checks, or other forms of payment will be accepted. This work will be performed for a fee of $72 per hour (minimum of one hour).
  2. We will load, in our facility, the standard Dartmouth software (only) on a new, unopened computer purchased at Computer Sales and Service for a flat fee of $72 per standard software load. This service is similar to the software installation we perform for first-year students each fall and does not include any delivery, in-office setup, etc.

Scheduling

Service under the first option above can be scheduled through Computer Sales and Service at the time the purchase is made or by sending e-mail to tcs@dartmouth.edu. All services will be performed on a first-come, first-served basis. On-site services will be scheduled at the mutual convenience of the customer and the Up and Running Service Technician. All costs associated with this option will be due once the service has been performed.

You can select the second option only if you purchase a new computer through Computer Sales and Service. We will perform the software installation in conjunction with any hardware installation (such as extra memory or Ethernet cards), normally within 24 hours from the time of purchase. The charge will be added to your hardware bill at the time of purchase.

Additional Policies

We will install any non-Dartmouth standard productivity applications (such as any Microsoft Office application, FileMaker Pro) or other applications, as long as you provide the original media (software disks or CD) with which to accomplish this installation. You must provide the registration codes and any necessary upgrades as appropriate. Copies of application disks are not acceptable.

When transferring the contents from a hard drive, we will move the entire contents to the hard drive of your new computer. We will make every effort to remove system software items that might cause potential problems if used on the new system. We will not destroy anything moved except specific system software items that may cause problems. We will not spend time checking to see if applications moved from your old system run on the new system. We may decline to install applications we are not familiar with. The transfer of application-specific system files (e.g., Preference files, Extensions, Control Panels, Apple menu items, etc.) will be done only after consultation with the customer to determine the level of service necessary.
