Dartmouth College is a participant in the Microsoft Campus Agreement program, an annual, institution-wide license that is based upon the number of faculty, staff and students that are currently enrolled or employed at Dartmouth.
Current faculty, staff, and students can now install and use the software purchased via the license agreement from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009. At the end of the license agreement, the College can then renew the license agreement. Should Dartmouth decide not to renew, then it must un-install the software and discontinue use.
In essence, this license provides the College with the ability to deploy a select group of Microsoft products by paying a single annualized fee based on our FTE (Full-Time Equivalent, Faculty and Staff) count. Microsoft also provided an option to include students under this license, which we have done. While the Campus Agreement is in force, there will no longer be any need to track and maintain extensive records of individual/group license purchases.
Who Can Use the Software?
The software is available for all currently employed faculty, students and staff. Because faculty and staff use is tied to employment, faculty and staff will not have rights to use the software after they terminate employment at the College. Faculty includes only those with teaching appointments.
Faculty emeritus, retired staff and alumni are not allowed to use the software on their home computers.
How Much Will It Cost Me?
Dartmouth has paid the initial cost of the license and those costs will be recovered in two ways. Machines sold at Computer Sales and Service will have an $85 charge included in the purchase price that will cover the operating system and other software covered under the agreement. CDs will also be available at the store at a minimal price. Each department or area should have at least one copy of the CDs or media. We strongly recommend that individuals with laptop computers also purchase and carry with them copies of the operating system and the Office suite.
Can I Take the Software Home and Use It on My Home Computer?
All software included under the campus agreement can be used on College owned faculty and staff home computers. Software is available for installation on personally owned home computers while employed by Dartmouth College at discounted prices.
How Long Will the Agreement Last?
The Campus Agreement is in effect for 12 months, renewable every year for an additional 12 months. The College intends to continue this program for the foreseeable future.
What About Macintosh Users?
MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) are available for Macintosh users.
What About Products Not Included?
The remainder of the Microsoft product line will continue to be available at discounted prices at Computer Sales and Service.
