You should download the file into a folder, rather than just onto your desktop.
Once downloaded, you may need to double click the file to expand it, then use the expanded files to install the application. Some applications will automatically expand and create a folder for you that contains the application installer.
Some applications will require a license number, or serial number. In these cases, one of the files that is expanded from the original file you downloaded will contain the appropriate licensing information.
