Technical Services operates Dartmouth's enterprise LDAP directory, which includes entries for all students, faculty, and staff, plus organizational entities like departmental offices and institutional functions. Information in the LDAP directory (ldap.dartmouth.edu) is accessible via standard LDAP protocols, as well as the Dartmouth-specific DND (Dartmouth Name Directory) interface. The DND is a different view on the same underlying LDAP data; they are not distinct directories. Information from DND/LDAP is also synchronized to the College's Active Directory server.
The LDAP directory is critical to the operations of the BlitzMail system, WebAuth, Shibboleth, Radius, and many other services that require authorization. Many systems and offices use membership in LDAP as the basic litmus test for the question "is this person part of Dartmouth?".
Students, faculty, and staff LDAP accounts are automatically created, maintained, and removed based on feeds from administrative databases (HR, Registrar). "Sponsored" accounts may also be manually added.
