Web Server Accounts

The primary Web server at Dartmouth is a UNIX machine called www.dartmouth.edu. If you want to publish Web pages on the Dartmouth Web site, you will need to have an account on www.dartmouth.edu. An active entry in the Dartmouth Name Directory (DND) is required before that account can be created.

Each individual with an entry in the DND is entitled to one personal account on www.dartmouth.edu. Accounts can also be created for departments or student organizations. Requests for departmental or organizational accounts must come from that department's or organization's DND account. Requests for an account for an organization or department that comes from an individual will be denied. Web space for courses is now found on BlackBoard.

Web site accounts are allowed to use up to 100 MB of space. In addition, if there is a need for audio, video, or very large files (over 10 MB in a single file), companion server space for these types of files is available by contacting the webmaster@dartmouth.edu.

When you request an account on www.dartmouth.edu, you will be notified via e-mail once the account has been created.

If you already have an account on one of the public UNIX machines (commonly known as the Northstar system), you will automatically be given the same login name when you request an account on www.dartmouth.edu.

Experimental Web Pages

Cobweb is the name of the experimental Web server at Dartmouth. If you want to create a CGI program or use applications that are not currently installed on www.dartmouth.edu, you must first test it on Cobweb. The Web server administrators will then review your CGI or application to ensure it doesn't cause problems or security risks. You must have an account on www.dartmouth.edu before you can get an account on Cobweb. Once the www.dartmouth.edu account has been created, send an e-mail message to webmaster@dartmouth.edu providing them with your www.dartmouth.edu login. An account with the same login and URL will be created on Cobweb.

Expiration of Web Accounts

Once the owner of an account on www.dartmouth.edu or Cobweb no longer has an active account in the DND, their account on www.dartmouth.edu and Cobweb will be deactivated within 30 days. When someone tries to access the URL of an expiring account during that 30-day period, a Web page appears notifying them that the account is scheduled to be deactivated. From this page, visitors can navigate to the page they were originally trying to access.

Once an account is scheduled for deactivation, the owner can download files from the site, but is prevented from uploading new files.

Anyone trying to access the URL of an account that has expired will get a "File Not Found" error. If the owner's DND account is reactivated during this 30-day period, the www.dartmouth.edu account will no longer be deactivated.

Accounts will only be deactivated prior to this date at the request of the owner of the account.

If you have questions, contact the Computing Help Desk at 646-2999 and select from the options provided, send e-mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or contact your department's computing support office.
