By 5:10 p.m. on Monday, March 31, more than a quarter of the Class of 2012
applicants knew if they’d be strolling the Dartmouth Green come September.
Despite a record number of applicants (nearly 16 percent more than last
year)—many of whom were logged onto the Office of Admissions Web site at any
one time—the traffic was smooth with no disruptions or slowdowns. And by 9:30
a.m. on Tuesday morning, more than 12,000 of the nearly 15,000 applicants for
regular admission had gone online to see the outcome of their application as
well as their financial aid requests.
“From a computing standpoint, this was almost a nonevent,” says Phil Hobbie,
project manager in Administrative Computing. “We conducted a test just weeks
before and were confident all systems were ready.”
Applicants were able to navigate through the program and find their
admissions decisions with little difficulty. Very few needed to call in for
help. Of course many of the applicants are old hands at using the Dartmouth Web
site, having been online with the College since they applied back in the
fall.
This online connection will extend through matriculation, Hobbie notes.
“Once students commit to Dartmouth in May, they can join the Class of 2012 Web
site, order their computers, sign up for Dartmouth Outdoor programs, complete
health forms, even arrange for placement tests all online.
And new this year: those on the waitlist will be able to signal their
interest in remaining on the waitlist online too.
The online web application process is made possible by teams in Computing
Services: from Web Services, Student Systems, Network Administration, and
Database Administration. This collaborative effort has provided for a timely,
well-integrated experience both for the Class of 2012 and the Admissions
Office.
