Computer shutting down at random intervals? Getting complaints about spam
from your computer? You're not alone — and it's easy to avoid.
- Buy an antivirus application. Computer Sales
and Service is selling the latest version of Symantec's Norton AntiVirus
(dated August 2003) for only $6. After you install it, be sure to set the
application to update daily.
- Make sure your Windows computer has all of its current software updates. To
do so, point your Web browser to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
and click the Start Download button.
- Once the update has run, configure your machine to update automatically.
Log on as an administrator and click Start,
Settings, then Control Panel. Click on the
shortcut called Automatic Updates. Check the box that says
Keep my Computer Up To Date, and click on the radio button
next to Automatically download the updates, and install them on the
schedule that I specify. Then select Every day and
specify a time.
You can always install specific updates from the Windows Update Web site
manually. Point your Web browser at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
and click the Start Download button.
