On November 11, Computing Services began blocking network access to
computers infected with viruses and worms.
Director of Computing Larry Levine sent a letter to all students last week
asking them to check and, if necessary, clean up infected computers. It's
estimated that more than a third of all student computers are currently
infected with worms, such as Welchia.
If you find you cannot get on the network to check e-mail or use the
Web, it's possible that your computer has been blocked. Please contact the
Student Help Desk at 646-2999 or e-mail help@dartmouth.edu for assistance.
If you have not checked to see if you have an infected computer,
please do so immediately. Here's how:
Download and run the removal tool for the Welchia worm. With the Welchia
worm, the only way you will know your computer has it is to run the removal
tool.
Configure your Windows operating system to automatically update itself when
critical Windows patches are released. See this page for instructions on
how to do so.
Finally, everyone should have updated antivirus protection. The College now
provides antivirus software free of charge to students, faculty, and staff.

You'll need
authentication software on your computer to download this software.
We appreciate your help in the battle against viruses. However, we are still
seeing significant network problems associated with viruses. Blocking network
access is the last resort used to protect the integrity of the network.
