Spam Filtering Service Now Available

Users of BlitzMail or other e-mail applications can use a new spam filter to screen out unwanted messages.

The filtering software, called SpamAssassin, analyzes your incoming mail on a number of criteria to determine if it meets your definition of spam (unsolicited commercial e-mail).

If a message meets that definition of spam — for example, it carries a subject line with the word Viagra — SpamAssassin moves the message into a folder for your review. (It's recommended that you periodically check that folder to determine if the messages should be thrown away.)

To use SpamAssassin, you must be using BlitzMail or a similar e-mail application that uses the IMAP protocol. POP is currently unsupported.

For more information, go to http://www.dartmouth.edu/comp/about/policies/email/spam.html.

The spam filtering service will also be available to alumni accounts on dartmouth.org this fall.
