A veteran higher education administrative systems consultant and
private-sector executive will be Dartmouth's new Director of Administrative
Computing, effective at the end of February.
Robert O'Leary is currently a Senior Manager in the consulting firm
BearingPoint's Boston office, in charge of the firm's Higher Education
technology practice. He has held various positions in finance, general
management, and technology for a number of companies, including Lockheed
Martin, Sanders, and Timberland.
"Bob is an outstanding manager who brings a wealth of experience and
insight to this key position," said Director of Computing Larry Levine.
"We're very fortunate to have someone of Bob's caliber on our technology
team as we strive to do more for Dartmouth with fewer resources." Levine
said O'Leary was selected from a very strong pool of candidates.
O'Leary's experience managing a wide variety of large-scale process-change
and technology projects is particularly valuable now, Levine said, as Dartmouth
seeks a higher return on the enterprise technology investments made in the
previous decade.
During the 1990s and continuing to this day, Dartmouth has replaced nearly
all of its administrative computing systems, including student records
(Banner), development (Advance), human resources and payroll, and the
enterprise databases and underlying technology infrastructure upon which those
systems depend.
The challenge is to refine, standardize, and prioritize those systems to
better meet the needs of all users of administrative systems throughout
Dartmouth, so that offices and departments can operate as efficiently as
possible in support of the academic enterprise.
Reflecting on the future, O'Leary said: "Dartmouth has done an
excellent job of upgrading the core components of its business systems. The
challenge going forward will be to digest these many changes and work towards
incrementally increasing the value these tools can bring to the College and all
of its constituents."
At BearingPoint and Lockheed Martin, O'Leary worked with institutions such
as Brown University, Syracuse University, the University of Maine, and the
American Red Cross on engagements similar to what he'll be handling at
Dartmouth: from systems implementations and upgrades, to data warehousing,
applications strategy, partner relationships, and contract negotiations.
Bob and his wife, Joanne, will reside in the New London area and are avid
skiers, hikers, and gardeners.
