Mail Servers Swamped By Spam

E-mail delivery to and from Dartmouth was disrupted this weekend by a flood of span that originated from three virus-infected computers on campus.

The machines spewed several million e-mails before being shut down, effectively clogging the two e-mail servers that handle all of Dartmouth's e-mail to and from the Internet.

The messages generated by the infected machines were deleted by system administrators, but the backlog of remaining messages is expected to take some time to clear out.

No legitimate e-mail was lost in the process of clearing out the spam. However, delivery of e-mail that was sent or received over the weekend will be delayed, and the messages may not arrive in chronological order.

Spam filtering has been temporarily turned off in order to help clear the queue. Messages continue to be scanned for viruses.

Mail between BlitzMail users does not interact with the affected servers, and should not be affected by the outage.
