The GreenPrint distributed printing system begins using a quota system at
the start of fall term in an effort to control costs and wasted paper.
Students will be able to print up to 600 black-and-white pages per term at
no cost, according to the new policy from Computing Services. For each sheet
above that limit, there will be a small charge. Color printing will be
available on a charge-per-page basis. Charges will be transferred to the
student's DA$H discretionary account.
Duplexed pages — A single sheet that's printed on both sides is less costly,
so people are encouraged to send jobs to the duplex printers.
The quota system comes after several years of joint effort by the Student
Assembly and Computing Services aimed at controlling spiraling costs, print
volumes, and waste — unclaimed or discarded paper -— that at one point
accounted for as much as 30 percent of the total volume.
The GreenPrint system allows students to submit a print job to a network of
computers and printer stations around the campus. From any one of those
stations, located in Berry Library, Collis, and several residence halls, one
can release the job for on-the-spot printing by entering their name and
password.
The GreenPrint station will also display the number of pages printed by the
user. It also allows users to reconsider whether they want to print a queued
set of pages, after seeing how many pages are about to be printed.
GreenPrint is intended for academic use and is available only to students
and faculty, as well as people who use declining-balance copier cards issued by
the Library. A faculty member may request an exception to the quota for his/her
students based on academic need by contacting the Operations Manager at
646-2280.
