Everyone who connects to the Dartmouth network shares in the responsibility
of keeping it secure. Having machines with up-to-date and fully patched
operating systems is the best way to keep the network safe. The recent increase
in virus-like worms, spread through the Internet and through e-mail, have
effected Dartmouth's network, as well as networks around the world. These
viruses exploit vulnerabilities in versions of Windows including 2000, XP, and
Server.
Infected systems generate huge amounts of traffic on the network, resulting
in slowing the network and, in some cases, damaging personal computers. When
Computing Services detects a computer that is generating large volumes of
network traffic, we disconnect it from the College network until it is fixed.
So please complete the following steps to prevent your computer from being
disabled on the network.
Windows Updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
Click the "Scan for Updates" link, then download and install all critical
updates. It is not necessary that you install the driver and non-critical
updates at this time. Restart your computer and repeat this process until the
scan shows no critical updates.
Antivirus Software: From the Start menu,
select Programs and Symantec Anti-Virus. Run
Live Update. Then configure your system to download virus
definitions on a regular basis.
If you are not running the current version, the software is available at Computer Sales
and Service (171 Carson Hall) for $6.00.
Removal Tools: To remove viruses that have been identified
on your computer, go to http://www.symantec.com/. From
the "Downloads section", select Download Virus Removal
Tools.
If you have questions, please contact the Computing Help Desk at 646-2999
and select from the options provided, send e-mail to help@dartmouth.edu, or contact your department's computing
support office.
