Dartmouth Video Producers Win Second Gold Medal

Dartmouth video producers Michael Murray and Michael Sacca have been awarded a gold medal in the 2001 CASE Circle of Excellence Awards program for their videotape on the World Percussion Music Ensemble - Return to the Well. The eight-minute piece was cited for its ‘wonderful use of natural sound’ and dramatic portrayal of ‘the passion of students and faculty’ who comprise the group.

Led by Music Professor Hafiz Shabazz, the World Percussion Music Ensemble explores and performs a wide-ranging repertoire, from ancient African rhythms to contemporary forms influenced by rock, rap, hip-hop, Afro-pop, Salsa, Brazilian Sambas, and world jazz. Return to the Well introduces and invites students and community members to participate in this innovative group that is one of eight ensembles affiliated with the Hopkins Center.

This is the second year in a row that Murray and Sacca, who are members of Instructional Services' Media Production Group, have won a gold medal in the CASE competition. Last year, their historical documentary, An Unlikely Cathedral, received top honors in the "General Information Features" category. Produced with David Hooke, the 30-minute video tells the intertwined story of the rise of intercollegiate skiing and the building of Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, along with the colorful characters that made it happen. About that production, the judges said: "Great historic film footage and archival photos, plus location footage interspersed on-camera interviews resulted in a package equal to the best of PBS production, and that eloquently captures a piece of one institution's soul."

Murray, Sacca, and colleague Tim Swaan are currently finishing up a year-long project, Voices of the Hop, which will premiere on September 21 for the Class of 2005. This wide-screen digital video production will introduce first-year students to the broad range of academic and extracurricular programs available at the Hopkins Center. The video trio also produced a video CD for the Admissions Office that was sent to all admitted ‘05s as part of their acceptance packet. The CD has subsequently been reproduced and is being sent to prospective students.

Headquartered in Washington, DC, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education is the organization that serves professionals working in alumni relations, communications, and development.
