Dial-up Service: Frequently Asked Questions

What Are the 56 Kbps Phone Numbers?

The phone number in Hanover, New Hampshire is 603-653-5250; the phone number in Norwich, Vermont is 802-649-0300. You can still dial the old Hanover number which is 603-643-0102, but this is a slower modem pool.

Which Phone Number Should I Use When Dialing Into Dartmouth's Network?

If calling Hanover, New Hampshire is a local call for you, then you should use the 653-5250 number. If calling Norwich, Vermont is a local call, but Hanover, New Hampshire is not a local call, then you should use the 649-0300 number. If these modem pools are all busy, then you should use the 643-0102 number.

Your local telephone company may make changes in the tariffs governing which exchanges may be called toll-free. You should check with your local telephone company to be sure that calling Norwich or Hanover is a local call.

I Recently Bought a 56 Kbps Modem (or Bought a Computer That Came With a 56 Kbps Modem). Will My New Modem Work With the 56 Kbps Dial-up Service?

Calls can be placed to either of the 56 Kbps modem pools by 56 Kbps modems that use the v.90 or the K56flex protocols, or by non-56 Kbps modems that use one of the established older modem standards (v.34, v.32, v.24, v.22). 56 Kbps modems that use the x2 protocol are not supported, although x2 modems should be able to connect at slower speeds since most also support the older modem standards.

What Are the Issues With This New Service?

56 Kbps modems are relatively new and many have bugs. We expect the new dial-up service will provide faster connection speeds for about half of the Dartmouth users, and will be the same or slower for the other half.

Our experience with 56 Kbps modems is highly varied. Some people in outlying areas, e.g., Strafford, get better than 33.6 Kbps performance using the Norwich number, while some people dialing from Norwich experience performance using the Norwich number that is the same or worse than they get with the Hanover number. There are many factors beyond our control that contribute to this situation: distance from a switching station, wiring inside one's home, and the quality of a connection can all affect your connection speed.

Here's some suggestions that should help people improve the reliability and speed of their connection:

  1. Make sure you have installed any available updates for your modem. Updates for common modems or those sold through Computer Sales and Service may be available on PUBLIC in the Third Party Support folder or check the vendors Web site for updates, even if you have a new modem.

Users who have a PowerBook G3 series, iMac, Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White), or a Power Macintosh G4 (PCI or AGP) computer should verify they have installed the Apple Modem Updater 2.0. To check, pull down the Apple menu and select Apple System Profiler. In the System Profile tab, click to open the Network Overview section. If the modem version number is not V2.300-V90, then you need the updater available on PUBLIC ->Third party Support -> Apple Computer, Inc. -> Networking & Communications -> Apple Modem Updater 2.0. Read and follow the directions for Updating Your Modem on page 2 of the "About Apple Modem Updater" file included in the folder with the update.
  2. If you are having problems dialing into either number, you may want to test both numbers and use the one which gives you the best results. If there are problems with the 56K modem pools, you may want to dial in to the 643-0102 number. This will be at a lower speed, but the connection may be more stable. The number of modems in this pool is limited, so you may experience busy signals during high traffic times.
  3. If your 56K modem is unreliable, try a v.34 script; these work with the 56K modem pools by forcing the modem to use a slower, more stable speed.

Apple Remote Access users can open the Modem Control Panel from the Apple menu and select a v.34 script from the pull-down menu. For example, "Apple Internal 56K Modem (V.34)" instead of "Apple Internal 56K Modem (V.90)."

LinkUppp! users are able to select modem scripts from the Log in windows pull-down menu.
  4. Global Village modem users may want to try the Supra Express Force v.34 script available from PUBLIC -> Network Software -> Dial-up Software -> Modem Scripts. Put it in your Modem Scripts folder in the Extensions folder in your System Folder and restart your Macintosh. You will then need to select the new script in the Modem Control Panel.
