Computing and Internet Resources at Dartmouth
Members of the Dartmouth community rely on one of the College’s historical strengths — computing and information technology — to help them weave an ever-expanding virtual community. Faculty, staff, and students can sit virtually anywhere on campus — indoors or out — and access world-class resources, without plugging into a network connection. In fact, the 2005 edition of the Kaplan/Newsweek America's Hottest Colleges rated Dartmouth "Hottest for the Tech-Savvy." Dartmouth now boasts a completely converged system that combines voice (phones), data (computers), and video information (cable television) on a single network, allowing for innovative multimedia and telecommunication services at the touch of a key. Also in August 2007, Dartmouth divided its single wireless network into three separate services to meet the needs of distinct groups of users, and also better safeguard Dartmouth's information.
While there are a number of tools for building this community, the virtual Dartmouth starts with the College’s World Wide Web domain, www.dartmouth.edu, which is made up of thousands of sites, comprising hundreds of thousands of individual Web pages. This constantly evolving electronic commons provides visitors the latest news and information about the College, links alumni around the globe in an electronic reunion, offers entrée to Dartmouth’s administration, and is a resource for current, prospective, undergraduate, and graduate students, as well as current faculty and staff.
BlitzMail — an electronic mail system developed at Dartmouth in 1988 — with its IM-style interface and speed also helps keep the conversation current. With more than 60,000 subscribers, including all students, faculty, and staff and all alumni of the College, BlitzMail is the electronic messaging medium of choice.
Off-Campus Internet Access
Off the Dartmouth campus, different levels of Internet access service – from dial-up and DSL to cable and wireless Internet access – are available around the Upper Valley (depending on location) from a host of other service providers. Among the providers is ValleyNet, a collaboration of Dartmouth and the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vermont.
