Dartmouth now has two Exchange environments -- on premises and Cloud. The on premises system is used by a subset of people in Senior Administrative areas. The cloud is where accounts are located for students, faculty, and the remainder of College staff not on the on premises system.
Both systems are Exchange 2010, and are accessible from Outlook 2010, Outlook 2011, Apple Mail/iCal/Address Book (only from Mac OS X 10.6) and via a web browser.
Many different types of mobile devices will work with the on premises and cloud systems, but to varying levels.
Some models can be configured to access e-mail, calendar, and contacts using applications built into the phone, while others may require the purchase of an “ActiveSync” application to access this functionality. Some may be limited in their capabilities and only allow access via a web browser.
We know that devices running the latest version of the iPhone OS (iOS 4) will work in both the cloud and on premises systems. See Using an iPhone for information on how to configure these devices for either of these systems.
In order to determine the capabilities of your device, Microsoft provides a Mobile Setup Wizard that walks you through configuring many phones for access to these systems.
The wizard requires that you provide the following information: your mobile phone provider (e.g. Verizon, AT&T), the type of device that you wish to configure, and what you want to do. You should answer the ‘What you want to do’ question, by choosing “Set up Microsoft Exchange”. Since Microsoft Exchange is not an option on all phones, the alternative would be to “Set up IMAP”.
During the set up of any mobile device minimally you'll be asked for 3 pieces of information: User name - enter your NetID@kiewit.dartmouth.edu; E-mail address - enter your full address (e.g. john.a.doe@dartmouth.edu); and your password.
If your carrier is not listed, try selecting another carrier that uses the same cell signal (e.g. if you are a US Cellular customer, select Verizon).
If your phone is not listed under your mobile phone provider, try selecting another provider to see if the phone is listed there. If so, the directions provided under the other provider may help you to configure your phone.
If your phone is not listed at all, we recommend trying to set up e-mail using IMAP settings.
If you don't want to or cannot configure e-mail and calendar applications on your phone, start a web browser and go to the appropriate web page to access your mail and calendar.

NOTE: Remote Device Wipe is a function that is enabled if your mobile device has been configured to access your Dartmouth Exchange account using ActiveSync. If your phone were lost or stolen, this procedure could be used to clear Exchange data from the device. Contact your department's IT support office, or the IT service desk at 646-2999 for additional information on this functionality.
