CDUG Note

Note to CDUG, June 13, 2008

Good afternoon! I would like to introduce Susan Lee. Susan has joined Web Services to work on a summer project to update the basic appearance of the web sites in our content management system.

The premise of this project is to convert common elements of our site designs to reflect updates to the College home page design. As you know, we are committed to providing our visitors with a consistent experience of the Dartmouth identity, and updating sites to the new template will provide more consistency across the Dartmouth web. The conversion to the new template requires that we take your existing design and modify the elements slightly so that they fit within the new design.

Please note that this web site update project is not a redesign project, but rather a conversion project.

As quick examples of the design differences, we would like to showcase:

as an example of the new design. If you would like to make a side-by-side comparison, you might look at one of our original designs:

For purposes of assuring a quality transition, we will need to deactivate editing capability on each site for 2-5 days during the transition period, as we transfer your current design to the new template. We understand this can be a serious inconvenience, so we are inviting you to give us "black-out" dates. If there are specific dates when your site must be available for editing, please let us know so that we can schedule accordingly.

Once we have an established schedule for the conversions, Susan will contact you to let you know the dates when your site will be unavailable for editing - and when to expect the new look to be in place and live on the Dartmouth web site. She will also touch base with you during the conversion process to provide updates and get your feedback.

Other than providing us with black-out dates, this entire process should require no further effort on your part.

If you would like to provide us with black-out dates, please send a message to Ellen.Kanner@dartmouth.edu. Please provide your department's URL and the precise dates that your site must be kept available for editing.

Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

Thank you, and happy Friday!
