System Features

The DND name directory has the following major features:

  • No User IDs - Each DND user is identified by his or her full name, not by an artificial userid.
  • Flexible Name Matching - The DND implements a flexible name matching algorithm (see Name Matching) that makes it possible to identify users with the same words one would use in conversation. There is no need to memorize special user identifiers.
  • Uniform E-mail Addresses - In combination with the BlitzMail system or sendmail modifications, the DND can provide uniform e-mail addresses for a heterogeneous e-mail community. Mail sent to john.doe@directory.acme.com, for example, will automatically be delivered to John Doe's preferred e-mail address, which may be on any SMTP-compatible mail system.
  • High Performance - The DND server is implemented as a multi-threaded server that can handle transactions very efficiently. It's designed for real-time lookups of names as users type them.
  • Security - The DND protocol supports validation with encrypted password exchange so that passwords do not need to be transmitted across the network in clear text (see Security).
  • Compatibility - The DND server can be configured to use an LDAP directory as its back-end data store, so the same information is visible to both DND and LDAP clients
