Mary Flanagan

An internationally renowned scholar and artist in game theory and design, Flanagan is Dartmouth's inaugural Fairchild Distinguished Professor in Digital Humanities.

GAME CHANGER

Tiltfactor, Flanagan's game design laboratory, is known for its focus on critical play, an approach that uses games and play for conceptual thinking and promoting social activism. Tiltfactor recently developed Metadata Games, a set of free, crowd-source games designed to help digital archivists organize visual libraries.

IN HER OWN WORDS

"Dartmouth is really at the forefront of using critical play to evoke social change," says Flanagan. "Games that address learning, stereotypes, social biases, public health and psychology are currently under development across campus."
