Financial Aid

Financial aid at Dartmouth is entirely need-based.

Need-based Aid

College-funded or college-administered award from institutional, state, federal, or other sources for which a student must have financial need to qualify. This includes both institutional and noninstitutional student aid (grants, jobs, and loans).

Need-based Scholarship or Grant Aid

Scholarships and grants from institutional, state, federal, or other sources for which a student must have financial need to qualify.

Need-based Self-help Aid

Loans and jobs from institutional, state, federal, or other sources for which a student must demonstrate financial need to qualify.

For the 2007-2008 Year

  • Approximately 50% of students received financial aid.
  • The average grant award for first-year students was $30,141.
  • The average self-help [job and loan] award for first-year students was $4,391.*
  • The average grant award for all students was $28,979.
  • The average self-help [job and loan] award for all students was $5,048.
  • Over $56.4 million dollars in scholarship/grant was awarded.
  • Over $10.7 million dollars in need-based self-help was awarded.
*Note: Beginning in 2008-2009 the average self-help for a first-year student will be $2,450.
