How does Dartmouth regard home-schooled students?
We recognize that home-schooled students are typically completing a thorough
curriculum in many academic disciplines. Every year, we receive many
applications from home-schooled students, and we have grown familiar with
making decisions about these students based on their academic capabilities and
performance. It is helpful to receive as much relevant coursework
information as possible from the home-school instructor(s) to make these
decisions. Oftentimes, we receive syllabi, book lists, writing samples,
and science reports from home-schooled students to show us their academic
breadth and depth. However, it is also helpful to get materials from mentors in
the community (i.e. music instructors, language teachers, etc.), who can speak
to the applicant's capabilities outside of their home-school environment. While
we do ask that you keep additional information relatively brief for reading
purposes, it is helpful to showcase your coursework as specifically as
possible.
Home-schooled students, like other applicants, are required to take standardized tests, to submit with the Common Application.
