What admissions criteria does Dartmouth use and who reads
applications?
Each application to Dartmouth is:
*Independently reviewed by at least two and usually three members of the
Admissions staff.
*Evaluated for the tangible academic accomplishments which are represented
by grades and test scores, and supplemented by essays, recommendations, and
interviews.
*Carefully considered for qualities such as passion for ideas, dedication to
learning, leadership, compassion, integrity, motivation, and sense of
humor.
*Evaluated for significant extracurricular involvements and interests beyond
the classroom – ranging from community service to debate to athletics to drama
and beyond.
Admission to Dartmouth is highly selective. The competition for admission is
a function of both the number of applicants as well as their outstanding
credentials. Each year, roughly 14,000 students apply for a first-year class of
1,075 students. A large and well-qualified applicant pool offers us the
opportunity to enroll a first-year class that is broad in the variety of
backgrounds, talents, and interests represented. Dartmouth seeks to enroll
students who have established outstanding records of academic accomplishment
and have made meaningful contributions to their schools and communities through
their various pursuits.
Our approach to the review of applications is thorough and thoughtful,
recognizing that the mix of accomplishments, interests, and potential varies
for each individual. In addition, the range of different opportunities and
educational experiences of students necessitates an open-minded and flexible
approach. There is no set formula or prescription for admission. Our
understanding of the student’s academic background is supplemented by essays,
recommendations, and interviews, which provide insight into the applicant’s
curiosity, passion for ideas, and dedication to learning.
The review of academic background is balanced by the consideration of the
student’s other interests and activities. As we consider significant
extracurricular involvements, as well as major commitments to work and family,
we seek demonstration of sustained commitment and accomplishment. Finally,
consideration is given to important human qualities such as leadership,
creativity, sensitivity, tolerance, compassion, integrity, motivation, and
sense of humor. This holistic review of the student’s application seeks to
recognize outstanding achievements, potential for future growth, and eventual
contribution beyond the undergraduate years.
