Aid Packages

Once financial need is determined, Dartmouth assembles an aid package. The aid package is developed in the following order:

  1. Self-help, consisting of student loans and campus employment, is the first item to be included in the aid package.
  2. Any remaining expense not met by self-help aid is met with grant/scholarship aid. Grant/scholarship aid consists of federal and state grant monies and/or Dartmouth scholarship funds. Unlike student loans, grant/scholarship aid does not need to be repaid.

Outside Sources

Some students receive financial support from outside sources such as National Merit and other organizations. In all but rare instances where the outside scholarship is extremely large, the College allows students to realize the full benefit of these funds. Dartmouth uses these scholarships to reduce--and when large enough, eliminate--the student loan and campus employment portions of the aid package.
