2009-2010 (Summer 2009 to Spring 2010)

  • 2009-2010 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) - February 15, 2009 Important Note: You must complete and submit the FAFSA application before completing and signing the Dartmouth Renewal Application and Federal Verification Worksheet.
  • 2009-2010 Renewal Financial Aid Application and Federal Verification Worksheet by April 1, 2009
  • Parents' and Students' signed 2008 Federal Income Tax Returns (all pages and schedules) and W-2s by April 1, 2009

Continuing students are not required to submit a CSS Profile. However, if you are a first-time, upperclass applicant for financial aid, you must register and complete a CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE Application on-line at: https://profileonline.collegeboard.com.

To apply for financial aid for summer, fall, winter, and spring terms of the 2009-2010 academic year, you must file the following documents by the appropriate deadlines:

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Deadline: February 1, 2009
Access: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

If you and your parent(s) previously received a PIN and you both know your PIN, go to www.fafsa.ed.gov on or after January 1, 2009, to complete your 2009-2010 Renewal FAFSA on the Web. Electronic filing and signing your Renewal FAFSA will allow your application to be processed faster and more accurately.

If you or your parent(s) previously received a PIN and you are not sure what it is, you may request a duplicate copy of your PIN by going to www.pin.ed.gov and selecting the option "Request a Duplicate PIN". Depending on the delivery method you choose when submitting your request, your PIN will be sent by e-mail or postal mail separately. When you use your PIN to access your 2009-2010 FAFSA on the Web, you will be prompted to select and answer a challenge question and agree to the terms and conditions of PIN usage. To protect the confidentiality of your application data, you should never share your PIN with anyone.

Your financial aid application cannot be considered complete or processed until we have received FAFSA information electronically from the Federal Processor and all other required documents. If application materials are late, demonstrated need may be met with less Dartmouth scholarship and more self-help (job and loan). Extensions will be granted only in extremely rare cases.

IDOC Cover Sheet and Required Materials

Rather than sending your renewal application, the federal verification worksheet, your tax returns, your parents' tax returns, and W-2 forms to the Financial Aid Office at Dartmouth, submit this documentation in one packet to the College Board Institutional Documentation Service (IDOC). Please do not fax or mail 2008 Federal Tax Returns or any application materials to the Financial Aid Office for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Deadline: March 1, 2009

Send IDOC Cover Sheet and Required Materials to:

The College Board IDOC
P.O. Box 4017
Mt. Vernon, IL 62864

In early February, you will receive an email notification from the College Board that provides instructions for submitting all required paperwork. The notification will provide instructions on how to print a copy of your cover sheet which must be included for accurate and timely processing. The IDOC cover sheet includes a "bar code" specific to you. This code ensures the scanned documents are maintained in a secure file. You must mail all information in one packet to the College Board along with the completed and signed IDOC Cover Sheet. The web address for additional IDOC information is https://idoc.collegeboard.com/idoc/.

When the College Board receives your documents, they will electronically image and transmit the documents to the Dartmouth College Financial Aid office. All information should be submitted to the College Board even if the information is completed after the April 15, 2009 deadline.

Required IDOC Materials

  • Signed copy of Parents' 2008 Federal Income Tax Return, including all schedules, W-2 forms no later than April 1, 2009. If you or your parents will be filing an extension, submit a copy of the extension request (Form 4868) together with 2008 W-2s. If no income tax return will be filed by you or your parents, this should be certified in writing by completing the 2008 Non-Filing Statement. Please be sure to provide all income received and the source of income.
  • Signed copy of Student's 2008 Federal Income Tax Return, if filed, including all schedules. See: Tax Filing Rules for Students.

Additional Information

  • Letter of Special Circumstances: If required information does not accurately reflect your family's financial situation, or if you believe a particular circumstance should receive special attention, we suggest you write a separate letter and enclose it with the documents that you submit to The College Board's IDOC Service.
Note: It is necessary to submit only one, complete packet of required documents to IDOC. If you have more than one institution listed on your cover letter, each school listed will receive your information. If your parents are divorced or separated, please provide your noncustodial parent with a copy of your cover sheet to submit his/her tax documents to IDOC.

Please do not send any tax documents directly to the Financial Aid Office, unless asked specifically to do so.

The confidentiality of your information is very important to the College Board and to Dartmouth College. Every effort is made to ensure the integrity and privacy of data submitted. To ensure the highest level of security, the College Board takes the layered defense in-depth approach and has implemented systems that include multiple firewalls with unique security zones, data encryption, intrusion detection systems, data and system backups, and data integrity checks.
